The event was graciously hosted by His Excellency Mr.
Evagoras Vryonides, High Commissioner of Cyprus, who warmly welcomed
dignitaries, diplomats, artists, and cultural enthusiasts. In his address, he
highlighted Cyprus’s six-month Presidency of the EU Council and emphasized that
the evening’s performance, themed “Love and Affection for Humanity and the
Homeland,” reflects the shared heritage and cultural spirit of Cyprus and the
Mediterranean region.
The highlight of the evening was a captivating performance
by Mr. Evagoras Karageorgis, a distinguished Cypriot composer, music educator,
and accomplished Laouto (Cypriot lute) player. He presented a unique musical
journey titled “Love and Affection for Humanity and the Homeland,” featuring
the evocative piece “Myrothkies Tou Yiasemiou (Scents of Jasmine)”.
With decades of experience, Karageorgis brought ancient
poetic traditions to life through contemporary musical expression, creating a
seamless blend of tradition and modernity.
He was joined by an exceptional ensemble of artists: Clio Papadia, an accomplished pianist, who beautifully blended Western classical traditions with Eastern musical textures; Alexia Yiangou, whose soulful cello performance added emotional depth and richness; and Paris Paraschos, whose powerful vocals brought out the essence of Cypriot culture and a universal message of peace.
Karageorgis, trained at the prestigious Aaron Copland School
of Music under Allen Brings and Leo Kraft, has developed a distinctive
compositional style combining contemporary techniques with traditional Cypriot
folk elements. His work spans solo, chamber, orchestral, and electronic music,
including the acclaimed piece “The Dream.”
As a founding member of the Centre of Cypriot Composers, he
has played a significant role in promoting Cypriot music globally. His
contributions to music education have also been instrumental in nurturing young
talent and preserving cultural heritage.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vipin Gaur, General Secretary of the Newspaper Association of India and Editor of Country and Politics, said, “Such cultural initiatives play a vital role in strengthening international relations and mutual understanding. Music is a universal language that transcends borders, and this evening beautifully showcased how art can connect nations like India and Cyprus.”
The evening witnessed the presence of diplomats, cultural
personalities, media representatives, and art lovers, who appreciated the
soulful and immersive performances.
The event not only showcased the rich artistic heritage of
Cyprus but also strengthened cultural diplomacy and people-to-people ties
between India and Cyprus, making it a memorable highlight of the EU Presidency
cultural celebrations in India.
